Plenty of common renovation tasks involve cutting concrete or masonry.

Will cutting make a mess in my house?

This is the question every homeowner asks, and the answer comes down to who you hire and what method they use.

Done properly, concrete cutting in a home is low-dust and clean. We wet-cut as standard, which suppresses respirable silica dust at the blade. For indoor work we use electric saws (no fumes), set up plastic isolation walls around the cutting zone, and run wet vacuums to capture slurry before it spreads.

Done badly — dry cutting with no containment — it coats every room in fine grey dust that’s almost impossible to fully clean. The difference is entirely in the method and the care taken.

Is the wall load-bearing?

Before cutting any wall opening, you need to know whether the wall is load-bearing. This determines whether you need a structural engineer involved.

Non-load-bearing internal walls can be cut without structural support. Straightforward job. Load-bearing walls — most external walls, party walls, and walls supporting an upper floor — need a structural engineer’s lintel design and a propping method before any cut. Cutting a load-bearing wall without engineering is both dangerous and illegal under Queensland building law.

If you’re not sure, get an engineer to inspect before you book a cutter. A 30-minute inspection costs far less than the consequences of getting it wrong.

How long does renovation cutting take?

Most renovation cuts are quick once the planning is done.

A standard internal doorway through a masonry wall takes 4-6 hours including setup, dust isolation, cutting, and cleanup. A load-bearing opening with lintel installation takes a full day or more. Floor penetrations for plumbing — a typical 6-8 hole job — is a half-day. Removing an old patio or slab section depends on size, usually half a day to a full day with removal included.

Most internal non-structural work doesn’t need council approval, but structural changes and some external modifications may. Your builder or a building certifier can confirm what applies to your specific renovation. We can cut once the approvals (if any) are in place.

Will cutting damage my tiles or render nearby?

Not with the right method. Wall and floor sawing produce no vibration shock, so surrounding finishes stay intact. We also protect adjacent surfaces within 3 metres of the cut with sheeting and tape. This is a key advantage over impact methods like jackhammering.
